A Surprise Victory in Stockholm’s Old Town

Johan Kärrström, a 34-year-old consultant from Hägersten, Stockholm, experienced an unexpected triumph when he was announced as the winner of Dagens Nyheter’s (DN) annual "Mellandagspromenad" (Boxing Day Walk) competition. Overwhelmed by the news, Kärrström admitted that he rarely wins anything, despite having participated in the competition numerous times over the past ten years, braving all types of weather. He candidly revealed, however, that he hadn’t always submitted his answers, a crucial step in claiming victory. This year, his persistence paid off.

The Mellandagspromenad is a beloved tradition in Stockholm, challenging participants to explore the historic streets of Gamla Stan (Old Town) while searching for specific architectural details and hidden gems. Armed with a set of clues published in DN, participants embark on a treasure hunt, meticulously examining buildings, doorways, and street corners to uncover the answers. This year’s competition featured thirteen questions, each requiring sharp observation and a keen eye for detail.

Kärrström, accompanied by his mother, Pirkko-Liisa, embarked on their quest, encountering both challenging weather conditions and unexpected camaraderie. Their first foray into Gamla Stan was hampered by icy streets, making it difficult for his mother to navigate. Undeterred, they returned for a second attempt, by which time they had already solved most of the puzzles. The experience, though arduous, solidified their shared love for exploring the city’s rich history and architectural treasures. The competition, Kärrström noted, serves as a perfect excuse to discover hidden corners of the capital.

Their focused pursuit of the answers did not go unnoticed. A colleague spotted the pair, mistaking them for tourists engrossed in their guidebooks. This humorous anecdote underscores the dedication and concentration required to succeed in the competition, transforming even seasoned locals into eager explorers.

The most challenging question, according to Kärrström, involved locating a specific decoration on Själagårdsgatan (number 8). Their search for this elusive detail highlighted the intricate nature of the competition, requiring participants to meticulously comb the streets for often inconspicuous clues. During their search, they encountered fellow participants, including a couple from Norrköping who regularly travel to Stockholm specifically for the annual Mellandagspromenad, further emphasizing the competition’s wide appeal and the sense of community it fosters.

The correct answers to the thirteen questions spanned various locations throughout Gamla Stan, highlighting the district’s architectural diversity and historical significance. The questions directed participants to specific addresses on streets like Stora Nygatan, Slottsbacken, Stora Gråmunkegränd, Österlånggatan, Prästgatan, Brunnsgränd, Själagårdsgatan, Lilla Nygatan, Västerlånggatan, Mynttorget, and Bollhusgränd. Each answer revealed a unique architectural feature, from a beautiful sculpture on Stora Nygatan 41 to a hidden doorway in Brunnsgränd 6 and a decorative element on Själagårdsgatan 8. The clues also included historical references, such as the house on Slottsbacken 8 built for the privy councillor Erik Fleming.

Kärrström’s first prize was a book package worth 500 kronor, a well-deserved reward for his persistence and observational skills. He wasn’t the only one to celebrate a victory. Five other participants were also recognized for their efforts, each receiving book packages worth 200 kronor. These winners included Birgitta Nilsen from Nacka, Annika Lissenko from Södermalm, Robin Munkner from Älvsjö, Ulrika Johansson Lundkvist from Strängnäs, and Kristina Aspenblad from Danderyd. Their success highlights the competitive spirit and the widespread enjoyment of this unique Stockholm tradition.

The DN Mellandagspromenad is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of Stockholm’s rich history and architectural heritage. It encourages residents and visitors alike to explore the city’s hidden gems and to appreciate the intricate details often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of daily life. The competition fosters a sense of community, bringing together individuals from near and far who share a passion for discovery and a love for Stockholm’s captivating Old Town. Through challenging questions and a rewarding experience, the Mellandagspromenad enriches the holiday season and provides a unique way to connect with the city’s past. The story of Johan Kärrström’s unexpected victory serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of this beloved Stockholm tradition.
