A series of explosions rocked Stockholm and surrounding areas in the early hours of Tuesday, January 28th, marking a disturbing continuation of a month marred by similar incidents. The first explosion occurred in Kärrtorp at approximately 4:05 am, targeting a residential building. While the blast damaged the building’s entrance, thankfully, no injuries were reported. Residents awoke to the sound of the explosion and were met with a significant police presence. The incident disrupted the morning routines of many, with some residents unable to access their cars due to police cordons. A sense of unease permeated the neighborhood, with residents expressing both frustration and resignation at the increasing frequency of such events.

Later that morning, around 8:46 am, another explosion occurred in nearby Bagarmossen. This time, the blast targeted a residential balcony, shattering a window and scattering debris. Again, no injuries were reported. In a significant development, two men were apprehended at the scene. While initially wanted for an unrelated offense, the police are now investigating their potential connection to the Bagarmossen explosion. The rapid succession of these two incidents heightened anxiety among residents, with one expressing fear and uncertainty about the coming night.

These incidents are not isolated. In the early hours of Tuesday, a shooting also took place in Hallonbergen, north of Stockholm, targeting a residential building’s entrance and a wall within the stairwell. No arrests have been made in connection with this incident, which is being investigated as attempted murder and a weapons offense. Furthermore, an explosion occurred just before 3:00 am in Ödåkra, outside Helsingborg, targeting a residential villa. Although the occupants were home at the time, no one was injured.

These latest explosions add to an alarming trend in Sweden, with at least 30 explosions reported in January alone, many concentrated in the Stockholm area. This wave of violence has prompted concern and calls for action. While the majority of these incidents have resulted in property damage, some have caused injuries. Just the day before, on Monday, January 27th, a person was injured in Bro, north of Stockholm, after a device detonated near a window in a residential building. The escalating violence, particularly the use of explosives, has sparked fear and disrupted communities.

The frequency and severity of these incidents have caught the attention of Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, who recently convened a meeting with police officials after the 24th explosion of the month. Strömmer expressed his condemnation of the violence, stating that such a situation is unacceptable in a decent society. The increasing number of explosions underscores the urgent need for effective measures to address the underlying causes and hold those responsible accountable. The incidents range from attacks on residential buildings to those targeting businesses and public spaces, raising concerns about the motivations behind these attacks and the potential for further escalation.

The string of explosions throughout January paints a grim picture of escalating violence in Sweden. From Göteborg to Stockholm, Malmö to Uppsala, the geographical spread of these incidents indicates a widespread problem. While investigations continue, the repeated targeting of residential buildings highlights a concerning disregard for public safety. The police are faced with the challenge of not only apprehending the perpetrators but also understanding the underlying causes and preventing future incidents. The repeated occurrence of these explosions, coupled with shootings and other violent acts, has shaken communities and raised questions about the effectiveness of current law enforcement strategies. The Justice Minister’s statement reflects a growing public demand for action and a commitment to restoring safety and security to affected communities.
